Conover - Days after a hit-and-run driver crashed into his mother's car, 2-year-old Hayden Edwards is still suffering the effects of a severe concussion, said his mom, 27-year-old Brandy Gunter.
Gunter's family heard from police the suspect in the hit-and-run turned himself in and was charged late Sunday.
Someone from the Conover Police Department was not available for comment.
Hayden is conscious, breathing on his own and out of the intensive care unit where he spent Friday and Saturday nights. But he can't eat, speak, sit up, walk or even lift his arms, Gunter said Sunday. Doctors tell her the child should regain those abilities, but it could take time. She said his progress is slower than doctors expected.
Hayden is in Wake Forest University's Baptist Medical Center. His mother expects him to make a full recovery, but for now she's thankful he's still alive.
Doctors told her if an EMS worker hadn't started CPR at the scene of the crash, Hayden would not have lived.
"Right now, I just want to hear him say Mommy," Gunter said.
She was behind the wheel of her 2003 Kia Spectra Friday around 6 p.m. when a 1986 Ford truck hit her car from behind. She doesn't think the truck's driver tried to stop. She never heard tires squealing.
Hayden was in a car seat, but doctors told Gunter the impact was so severe, it jarred his brain.
All Gunter saw was the truck was speeding away, headed south on Travis Road in Conover. The crash was at the intersection of Travis and Emmanuel Church roads, where Gunter was waiting to turn.
A witness followed the truck and told police its North Carolina license tag number was VVL-2630.
Gunter hopes the driver who left her son seriously injured will be punished. She worries the memory of the crash will permanently scar her children. She knows she will carry the scars forever.
"My child was laying here Friday night on a ventilator because of some person who was too scared to stop," she said. "I wouldn't be as upset if he had just stopped. Accidents happen. But it's unforgivable what he's done."
Gunter's boyfriend and her 5-year-old son Hunter Edwards also were in the car. Hunter's face was cut and the adults were banged up. They were treated and released from Catawba Valley Medical Center.
Gunter has one request for people concerned about Hayden: Pray.

MORGANTON - The mother of a toddler who was taken to Carolinas Medical Center last week due to brain injuries has been charged with misdemeanor child abuse.
Alecia Danielle Nanney, 24, of 4734 Homestead Way, Glen Alpine is scheduled to appear in court May 28.
The warrant for Nanney's arrest said she, as the parent of the 23-month-old girl, allowed Cody Garrett Chadwell, 23, of 4734 Homestead Way, Glen Alpine "to inflict physical injury upon the child by beating the child with his fist."
The injury caused the child's brain to bleed and left bruises on 98 percent of her body, the warrant states.
Chadwell was charged May 10 with felony intentional child abuse-serious physical injury.
Sheriff's investigators said a deputy and Burke County Department of Social Services worker went to Chadwell and Nanney's residence May 8 to investigate a report of suspected child abuse. The deputy and social worker saw bruises on the toddler's face, arms, legs, back and throat.
Investigators said they suspect Chadwell had been spanking the toddler since May 2.
The father admitted to spanking the toddler too hard because he was stressed about pending court cases, detectives said.
The toddler was released from Carolinas Medical Center at the end of last week, detective Jody Price said. She is not in her parents' custody.

Jay Gaither Puts Lives Of Burke County Residents At Risk Yet Again By Giving A Deal To Another One Of His "Friends"
This is and epidemic in the DA's office today, personally I think it is the job of the DA to keep the people safe from violent offenders, as it is also with the sheriff's offices and police departments. But when District Attorney, Jay Gaither hands special privilege to violent offenders whom he considers friends, time and time again, ranging from child sex predators, to those involved in domestic battery, and child abuse, and in the latest this DWI case. We see things are way out of hand with this district attorney, and he must be stopped, and voted out. I have been bullied by this man and stalked by his staffers and supporters, but I am not backing down. Here is the latest article from the News Herald.

Morganton - Police charged a 52-year-old man with an eighth DWI on Tuesday morning after his truck hit a patrol car. That was after the man's truck hit a mailbox and a guardrail, and then rear-ended a truck, police said.
Witnesses reported Keith Nelson Buff driving erratically along Fleming Drive around 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Buff, of Henredon Road, was charged Tuesday with DWI, failure to reduce speed to avoid collision and hit and run. He also is appealing four DWI convictions and awaiting a court appearance on two more. He racked up all six over the last four years. He also has a 2001 conviction on his record.
Buff was not wearing a seatbelt and hit his head on the windshield. He was first transported to Grace Hospital then to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, Morganton Department of Public Safety Officer Sam Adams said.
Public Safety Maj. Billy Bradshaw said several people called 911 Tuesday morning to report an erratic driver causing damage on Fleming Drive.
Adams said Buff's Ford truck hit a mailbox in front of Competitive Housing at 521 E. Fleming Drive and a portion of the guardrail between Hogan and South Sterling streets.
Two of the callers were driving behind Buff, Bradshaw said. By the time the driver approached the intersection of West Fleming Drive and College Street, a public safety officer was behind him.
Police say that's when Buff rear-ended a Ford truck, then rolled backward into a police car.
Adams said the man driving the truck Buff rear-ended was transported to Grace Hospital. He did not release the victim's name.
Buff isn't new to the court system. He was convicted in 2001 of a level 4 DWI. Five years later, in 2006, Buff was found not guilty of a DWI.
But from November 2006 to April 24, Buff amassed six DWI charges. Four of the charges are up for trial on June 7 in superior court.
Chief Assistant District Attorney Eric Bellas said Buff was convicted of those four DWIs in district court, but has appealed to superior court.
The two remaining DWI charges, one of which included a misdemeanor child abuse charge, are pending in district court for July 14 and Sept. 1.
